Lighting Design Evaluation

I really enjoyed designing lights for stage. This unit has confirmed by desire to pursue this element of the course further in the future. I particularly enjoyed looking at the lighting stock and working out what affects could be used.

The challenge for this particualr project was to create a multipurpose event as there were numerous performance pieces which needed lighting seperately. For example, the requirement to introduce pars on booms, whilst also looking at backlight and general washes.

Whilst I believe I succeeded in all aspects of this project there are areas which I would like further training and guidance. These include:

• Confidence - I feel that during the rigging and focusing sessions I lacked the confidence to lead and motivate the crew to do exactly what I needed them to do.
• Accuracy - I think that I could have been more accurate with my drawings and plans for how much cable I needed for extentions.

Overall, I think that the showcase was a success but I need to improve myself to be able to do the job to a better standard.

Task 2 : Directors Concept

The conecpt for the Xmas showcase was to give the hall a christmas feel and have light the space for performances such as dance and choir peices. To make the space christmassy we thought of adding christmas tree around the stage with fairy lights on them and hanging from the rig and then rope light around the audience seating. To make light for the variety of show that would be on for the nights, we must use front light on seperate parts of the stage for the choir and acting peices and then side light for mainly the dance shows.  

Task 2 : Lighting 3D Plan

These are printscreens of work that I have done in Daslights which is 3D visualisation software that lets you use the rig, lights and space that you would be using for the actual show. This is good as you can look at what you have done in the LX plan in a 3D version so you know if you need to change anything to make it look better or if there as places that are not being lit.

 

Task 2 : Lighting Manual Plan

 

This is the original plan for the manual lighting plan. The point of this is so that the designer can easily make a 1st plan of what they imagine they want the show to look like. It is usually done as a manual drawing so that it is easy to rub out and re-do. We have also done a key for the lights as so if anyone needs to look at it and doesnt understand then it is easy to find out what is happening within the plan.

Task 2 : Lighting Design - Focus Notes

These are the focus notes for the Xmas Show. The point of these are so that if the designer is not able to make it to the focusing session then the crew that are there doing that can continue, putting the lights in the correct position. The focus notes should be in detail to make sure that the crew would have all the information needed and no questions would need to be asked.

 

 

Task 2 : Lighting Design - Colour Call

 

 

This is the colour call for the show. This is done by having the lantern across the top of the table, then the colour code across the side then where they join you say how many of that type of colour need to go in that type of lantern. This makes it easier to get all the gels cut to the correct size as you will know how many you need for a particular size as the lanterns would all have different size gel frames.

Task 2 : Lighting 2D Plan

This is the original copy of lighting plan that we had imagined for the xmas showcase. The plan was produced using the LX Free Java software that has the lighting symbols to add to the plan so it is easy to see what was wanted by the designer if they are not there for the rigging process. The number for the dimmer and channel will be at the back of these lights so that the rigger knows where to plug the light into. On the front of the light there will be the code for the colour that is wanted for the light, for example 079 would be a blue, and o/w would be open white (no gel).
